What is your education [degree(s)]? What is a current goal you have with your education/career?
I've explored different fields of study, including Psychology and Security Studies. However, I realized that a traditional desk job doesn't align with me both physically and mentally. My passion for sports and the need to understand my body's workings have led me to pursue study in Health Science, which I plan to start in 2025. My ultimate goal is to gain the knowledge necessary to maintain my health and maximize my physical abilities, while also helping others in similar life circumstances.
What’s a typical day for you?
My day typically begins with walking my dog and tending to my mini backyard farm, where I grow a variety of fruits and veg. I prepare meals for the day, commute to the city, and dedicate a significant amount of time to training and exercise. My routine is structured around my commitment to Wheelchair Fencing and Para-Rowing and maintaining an active lifestyle to fight my FA's progression.
How long have you known you are living with FA? When and how were you diagnosed?
I was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia at the age of 15. It was a life-altering moment, forcing me to confront the reality that some of my dreams and goals might not be as easily within reach as I once thought. Since then, I've been on a journey of adaptation, learning to navigate life with a progressive condition.
Describe an adaptation and/or transition you have had to take due to living with FA.
The transition from walking independently to using a wheelchair was significant, but I've learned to embrace the tools that help me maintain my independence.
What do you like to do to stay active, and what type of exercises work for you to stay strong?
To stay active, I use a rowing machine for cardio and incorporate strength training into my routine. I also find creative ways to add more physical activity to my day, like taking the long way home by getting off the train or bus one stop early and pushing myself the rest of the way.
Do you have any hobbies or special interests?
In addition to sports, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, gardening, reading, and capturing candid moments on film.
What is a good trick to make daily life easier?
For me, keeping a paper trail and staying physically active are essential. Both help manage my ADHD and keep me organized, focused, and relatively sane.
What’s something I want people to know/understand about FA?
Living with FA has its challenges, but I want people to know that it’s important to give yourself the space to grieve what’s been lost, but also to never stop moving forward. Whether it’s physically, mentally, or spiritually, finding something that fuels your passion is key. For me, it’s sport and exercise and working towards representing Australia, the Iranian diaspora, and the FA Community on the international stage, but it’s different for everyone. Just remember — don’t allow yourself to stagnate, and keep pushing towards your goals, whatever they may be.
What is the best advice YOU could give to a person who has been newly diagnosed with FA?
Keep moving! Never stop, physically or mentally, or you risk stagnating. Staying active is key to maintaining your physical and emotional well-being.
What is the first thing you want to do when a cure/treatment for FA is found?
I’d book a flight to Melbourne, take the train to Castlemaine, travel to my childhood homes in Harcourt and Chewton, and walk or run around in the fields. Then, I'd head back to Melbourne to celebrate with friends.
Did your diagnosis impact your friendships and relationships? If so, in what way?
My diagnosis did impact my friendships and relationships. While some friends drifted away, most stuck around, and it became a mutual learning experience. I've come to appreciate the support of those who stayed, and I take responsibility for any strain that may have occurred during the challenging times.
What is your favorite part of your education or work/career?
My sport keeps me active, mentally engaged, and boosts my serotonin. It provides structure and a sense of accomplishment.
